Firebird Metadata Synchronizer
Firebird Metadata Synchronizer (FMS) is a simple way to ensure multiple Firebird SQL databases are in synch with each other. By comparing the DDL of the databases, FMS can tell you if the databases are different and provides a simple 'one click' update facility to update the target database to ensure it is the same as the source. The most common use of this program is for developers & DBAs to keep multiple Firebird databases in synch, without destroying their data each time an update is done. If you have ever developed an application with Firebird, you know that you will go through numerous versions of both the application and database structure. And when the critical time comes to move your development release to test or test to production, you need a way to do it quickly and painlessly. Without destroying the data in the test or production system. FMS is the answer.

FMS is a crucial tool for the developer. If you are using Firebird in a production environment, such as a server database for your business applications or as a database for Web applications, you'll know that the last thing you want is unnecessary user downtime while you are trying to work out what didn't get updated from your application release to release. Firebird has so much power, particularly with its stored procedures, that its not uncommon to take a large amount of your application logic and embed it in the database. This is great for performance, but becomes a management nightmare if you have multiple versions of Firebird to update with each release.
FMS provides a simple 'project' view for your database. When you start the application, you setup the Source and Target databases for the project.

You can choose the Protocol (TCP, IPX, etc.), identify the server, the user name & password to connect with, and the SQL Dialect that is in use. Finally you choose to synchronize with the database file or a script file. This is done for both the Source & Target databases. Once you have successfully tested the connections, you can save your project for easy retrieval as you synchronize.
Once the project is saved, then you can start the synchronization process.

You click on Extract to gather the DDL information from the two databases. Once this is done, then you click on COMPARE to compare the two. FMS will then tell you if there are differences between the two databases. The Result section will show the differences. If there are differences and you wish to update the Target database, just click UPDATE. The target is then updated with the differences bringing its DDL in synch with the Source.
Its that easy. You can also save a Script file of the changes necessary to update the databases if you with to make this change standard from version to version of your application releases.
The key to FMS is its simplicity. Its a tool in your tool chest of development utilities and is inexpensive. Priced at only $39, its affordable for everyone and the ideal tool to have in your collection for metadata updates.
